Year 10 - From My Front Porch

Year 10 - From My Front Porch

Year 10 in Navy and Gold starts tomorrow!
What started as a school taking a chance on a young coach has turned into a program that hopefully Jeff Davis County can be proud of. I am still thankful for what the leadership of JDCS does for our community 10 years in. They are what allows all of our athletics to compete the way we do! Families, times, and the world has changed in the last 10 years, but the constant in the life of my family has been Jeff Davis Football. When my feet hit the floor every morning my mission still is to make Jeff Davis Football better. We have been through slogans, coaches, and various regions/classifications over the last decade. What we have figured out is 3 things we want our program to stand for.

Honor God. Win the things that take no talent (TNT’s). Brotherhood over self. As I type this I am saying to myself, boy things have changed. I have made so many mistakes in the last decade, and early on I made it all about Wins. I loved my players back then, but it was a scoreboard business. 2 years ago, a life changing trip made me realize 1 thing. The lord ain’t gonna ask me about the win vs Swainsboro to break the playoff streak in 17, but he is gonna ask me what I did with all of the kids I have coached.

I have failed a bunch over the last decade. We have lost games we shouldn’t, and those truthfully bother me more than the wins make me feel good. Thanks to all the assistant coaches that have picked up my slack and made this program go over the last 9 seasons. I am still as driven as I was back then (just older, heavier, and more grey). I love every young man that has worn the Navy and Gold of our Program through the years. Even though I made plenty of mistakes I pray that they know I was hard on them because I love them, and I want them to be productive husbands and fathers. That’s why my family does this. I want the Brotherhood of Jeff Davis Football to be a part of what molds them into Manhood.

I am so jacked up about this 2026 season. I love our team, our coaches, our program, and our town. Jeff Davis Football is a family affair to the Heltons. The 2 little ones in this picture still watch practice today, and their mama still makes everything happen (Truthfully she is the one that really runs the behind the scenes of Jeff Davis Football).

This coaching thing ain’t for the weak of heart, but boy it’s worth it in the long run. When you’re wearing Navy, you’re as good as Gold! See everyone in the Pinelands soon, and Go Jackets!
